	Dr. Shaikha bint Jabor Al Thani Qatar University: Vice President and Chief Academic Officer Topic: Opening Session and Chair of Panel Sessions Date: 18 January 2011 Time: 8:45 am - 9:10 am
Dr. Shaikha Bint Jabor Al Thani is QU Vice President and Chief Academic Officer of Qatar University since 2005. Dr. Shaikha completed a BSc in Mathematics in 1981, at the College of Science - Qatar University, and her Master degree in Mathematics in 1986, at Assiut University in Egypt. Dr. Shaikha earned her PhD from the University of Exeter, UK in 1992. Dr. Shaikha held many positions at QU as assistant professor, Vice Dean and then Dean of the College of Science. Dr. Shaikha's field of specialization is Abstract Algebra; she enjoys teaching all Abstract Math courses. Dr. Shaikha is always keen on bringing new techniques of interactive teaching into the classroom, integrating new specialized software that help stimulate students and make them able to understand Mathematics, and more importantly, how to apply abstract theories into real life problems. Dr. Shaikha's research areas include abstract mathematics and assessment. Writing text books in Arabic for university students that present Math in a more challengeable, enjoyable style is one of her numerous projects.

Dalal Moukarzel

Dalal Moukarzel is completing her PhD in Educational Sciences at the University of Haute-Alsace in France with an emphasis on teachers’ professional development and students’ engagement. Ms. Dalal received her Master’s degree in Educational Administration and Policy Studies in 2006, and a Diploma in Educational Management and Leadership in 2002 from the American University of Beirut. Her BA was in French Literature (1988) from the Jesuit University of Saint-Joseph-Lebanon.

Ms. Moukarzel has more than 25 years of experience in the field of education in Lebanon, serving as Head of schools, Coordinator, Teacher and school Consultant. She has given many presentations about classroom management, teamwork development, conflict resolution in schools, and leadership.

In October 2008, Ms. Moukarzel joined Qatar University as a Lecturer and Coordinator of the Professional Development Program for Qatari schools at the College of Education. In May 2008, she became the Director of the Office of Faculty and Instructional Development. Ms. Moukarzel’s areas of interest are instructional leadership, professional development and assessment.

Dr. Hasna received his BSc degree in 1994 from Qatar University, MS degree in 1998 from the University of Southern California and PhD degree in 2003 from the University of Minnesota, all in Electrical Engineering, majoring in communications engineering. In 2003, Dr. Mazen joined the electrical engineering department at Qatar University as an assistant professor, became the head of department head in 2005, and in 2007, was appointed as the associate dean for academic affairs. Dr. Hasna's research investigates digital communications theory and its applications to wireless communication systems. At present, his research is specifically focused on cooperative diversity, wireless sensor networks, cognitive radio systems and software defined radio systems.

	Professor Peter Jewesson Qatar University: Dean of the College of Pharmacy Topic: Advancing Pharmacy Education to the Next Level Date: 18 January 2011 Time: 9:45 am - 11:15 am
Professor Jewesson is a graduate of the Faculty of Phamaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He received his BSc (Pharm) in 1978, completed a Hospital Residency (C.S.H.P. certified) at St. Paul's Hospital (Vancouver) in 1979, and his PhD (Clinical Pharmacy) at UBC in 1986. Between 1986 and 2004 Professor Jewesson was been on faculty in the Clinical Division at UBC with a clinical cross- appointment to Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre (VHHSC). Professor Peter was promoted from Assistant to Associate Professor in 1991 (with tenure) and to a Full Professor in 1996. He was the Chair of the Division of Clinical Pharmacy between 2004-2006. Professor Peter held various posts at the VHHSC and was the Co-Director of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Clinical Service Unit when he departed in 2004. Professor Jewesson left Canada in September 2006 to start the new Pharmacy Program at the Qatar University in Doha, Qatar.

Dr. El Motaowa earned both her PhD (1987) and MA (1985) in Education from Ain Shams University in Cairo. From Qatar University, Dr. Fatma was awarded BA in Arts and Education (1978) and Diploma in Education and Psychology (1980). Dr. Fatma has conducted research in areas of supervision reality, learning Arabic language, teaching of reading, writing and artistic tastes, innovative thinking for primary stage students and similar. Dr. El Motaowa has participated in international conferences and scientific seminars; she has served on scientific committees and participated in social service activities.

Dr. Ahmed H. Ibrahim is a Professor of Modern Middle East History. He specializes in the Modern History of the Middle East, the Arab-Israeli Conflict, and Film and Culture. Dr. Ibrahim's research and teaching cover the Arab and non-Arab cores of the Middle East with emphasis on politics and diplomacy, Arab-Israeli relations, and American-Arab relations. Dr. Ibrahim's research and publications include refereed articles in major academic journals to monographs and textbook manuscripts. Dr. Ahmed was awarded his PhD, from the University of Chicago in 1992.

Mrs. Kira holds a Master’s degree in Cultural Studies and TESOL from Bowling Green State University (USA) in 1999 and will receive her Master’s in Library & Information Science from Clarion University (USA) in 2012. Mrs. Kira has been a QU faculty member since 2007.

Dr Wright specializes on the politics and international relations of the Gulf region. He was educated at the University of London where he received a degree in social and political science, and also at the University of Durham where he obtained a Masters in International Studies and a Ph.D. in International Relations. After graduation Dr Wright became the Sir William Luce Research Fellow at Durham University's Institute for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies. Currently Dr. Steven is an Assistant Professor specializing in Qatar, Gulf Politics and International Relations of the Gulf. Dr Wright is Head of the Department of International Affairs. Dr. Steven's research and teaching interests are Qatar's Politics, Economics and Foreign Relations, Energy, Political Reform in the Gulf States and U.S. Foreign Policy.

Topic: Sharing Experience – Excellence in Teaching using Online Instruction

Mrs. Lijy Jose is a PhD candidate at Oklahoma State University, USA,where she earned a Master’s in Electrical Engineering. Currently, she is a lecturer in the Computer Foundation Program at Qatar University. Mrs. Jose has been named as first winner of the Excellence in Teaching Award in Science fields. Her Foundation Computer II course has been ranked first for exemplary online instruction. Mrs. Lijy’s course excels in providing extensive information and online learning support such as tutorials, resources, links that support course content.

Mrs. Lijy’s course is characterised by interaction, continuous feedback on student performance through blogs and discussion board tables, and venues for students to reflect on the course and its contents. Mrs. Lijy’s use of visual learning aids and interactive activities has no doubt contributed to and enhanced her students’ critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Professor Hindi was awarded a DBA in 1991 from Mississippi State University, an MA in 1985 was from University of Alabama and a BSc in 1981 from University of Jordan, all majoring in accounting. At Qatar University, Professor Nitham has been Dean of College of Business and Economics since 2010 after serving as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Director of MBA Program, Qatar University (2009 - 2010). During his career, Professor Nithan has taught many accounting courses, including Financial accounting, Managerial Accounting, Cost Accounting, Accounting Theory, and Accounting Information Systems. He has been teaching at Qatar University since 2005. Professor Hindi's research interests include Assurance of learning (assessment), communication skills, XBRL, and financial issues.

Professor Al Mannai earned her Doctorate and Master degrees from Al-Azhar University(1990) and her BA from Qatar University(1981). She became an Associate Professor(1996) and Professor in 2005. Professor Aisha taught courses on Creed, Islamic philosophy, religions, mysticism, logic, and modern Islamic thought. Professor Aisha attended many conferences in the Gulf, the Arab world, Iran and some European countries and refereed research and scientific books in the area of specialization. She has written many books and papers that have been published and others still in process. Professor Aisha is a Member of the Transitional Arab Parliament - The Arab League and a Trustees Committee Member for both the State Incentive Award and the Discretionary Award - The National Council for Culture, Arts and Heritage (2004 to present). She serves on numerous other committees. Professor Al Mannai was honoured in Egypt by President Hosni Mubarak, in recognition of her valuable contributions to Islamic studies (April 2, 2007).

Dr. Khalid Abdulla Al Ali is the Director of Foundation Program at Qatar University and specializes in the area of Human Genetics. Dr. Khalid has previously worked as the Head of Health Sciences Department and the Vice Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Khalid was Head of the Health & Environment Research Unit of the Scientific & Applied Research Center (SARC) in Qatar. Dr. Khalid established the first Cytogenetics Laboratory at the Hamad Medical Corporation (Qatar) and has several publications to his name in the fields of Cytogenetics and Bioethics. Dr. Al Ali is currently a member of the World Commission on the Ethics of Science Knowledge and Technology (COMEST) and the Arab Committee for Science and Biotechnology Ethics. Dr. Al Ali is a member of the Board of Directors for the Qatar Cancer Society and he also served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Arabian Gulf University of Bahrain until December, 2010. Dr. Khalid chairs two IRB (Institutional Review Board) Committees; one at the Qatar University and the other at Shafallah Medical Genetic Center of Qatar.

Dr. Suzanne Shams is a U.S. attorney, licensed to practice in the state of Maryland. Dr. Suzanne received a Juris Doctor from American University Washington College of Law in Washington D.C., a Master’s Degree in Public International Law with a focus in Human Rights and Refugee Law from the American University in Cairo, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the University of California, Riverside. During her studies in D.C., Dr. Shams worked at Shook Hardy & Bacon LLP, the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, the Tahirih Justice Center, and the Council of the District of Columbia. Dr. Suzanne served as a research and teaching assistant throughout her graduate career and was a volunteer Lecturer of Refugee Law for the Cairo Community Interpreter’s Program. Dr. Shams served as a senior staff member on the Administrative Law Review, was regularly published in the Human Rights Brief, and was runner-up in the 14th Annual African Human Rights Moot Court competition in Johannesburg, South Africa where she argued the final round before the Chief Justice of the South African Constitutional Court.

Dr. Romanowski offered many workshops on various educational issues in Qatar such as interdisciplinary courses, action research, issues in leadership and critical thinking. His research and writings appear in various academic books and education journals. Dr. Michael continues to research and write on various educational and culture issues.

In 1997, Dr. Abdel-Hady was awarded his PhD from the Department of Islamic Studies, Glasgow University, UK, after which he acted as Research Fellow until 2002. Dr. Zakaryya then worked briefly with Al Maktoum Institute at University of Abertay in Dundee before spending three years at Abu Dhabi University as an Assistant Professor of Islamic Thought and Culture, and the Coordinator of the Islamic Studies Discipline. Dr. Abdel-Hady has written several books and published numerous journals and conference papers. Dr. Abdel-Hady is founder and president of the Arab Association of British Alumni (AABA), is active in community service and has received awards and certificates for accomplishments in his field. Dr. Zakaryya's research interests lay in the areas of Islamic Thought & Culture, Islam & the West, Islamophobia, Women rights, Islamic Civilization, Globalization, Terrorism, environmental studies, Islam and Social Sciences.

A post graduate in English Language and Literature, from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, India, Bino Sarah Paul has completed 16 years as a university lecturer, both in India and Qatar. Ms. Paul holds a Bachelor degree in Education and is also certified to be a lecturer by the University Grants Commission, India. Ms. Bino has been teaching at Qatar University since September 2001. A lecturer in the Foundation Program English Department, Ms. Paul is also the co-ordinator of External Examinations conducted by the Foundation Program since 2005. The tests Ms. Bino administers include TOEFL iBT, IELTS, PCAT, ACT, ACCUPLACER and IC3. Organising various training programs, in association with test providers is also part of her mandate.

Recently, Professor Ashraf M. Salama was appointed as Dohaland Chair in Architecture. Dr. Ashraf has held permanent, tenured, and visiting positions in Egypt (Misr International University and Al-Azhar University), Italy (University of Naples_Federico II), Qatar (Qatar University), Saudi Arabia (King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals), and the United Kingdom (Queen's University Belfast).

Professor Ashraf is the chief editor of Archnet-IJAR: International Journal of Architectural Research, collaborating editor of Open House International-OHI, an editorial board member of Time-Based Architecture International and International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health-(IJERPH) and a member of the editorial board of Architects for Peace. With varied experience in academic research, teaching, consultancy, and research based practice, Professor Salama bridges theory and design and pedagogy and practice in his professional activities. Professor Ashraf has written over 100 articles and papers in local and international conferences, archival journals, and trade magazines; he has authored / co-edited five books.

Topic:    Motivating Students While Raising the Bar: Experience from an Undergraduate Laboratory Course

Dr. Ali H. Eid holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biomedical Sciences from Ohio State University. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute at OSU, where his research was conducted in the Vascular Physiology Division. After finishing his doctoral courses, Dr. Eid opted for track specialization in “Molecular Pharmacology, Pharmacogenomics, and Therapeutics”, also from OSU. Dr. Eid had previously obtained his Master of Science (MS) degree from Bowling Green State University, USA. His undergraduate degree was a Bachelor of Science (Biology) received from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon.

Dr. Eid's laboratory is interested in the molecular signaling implicated in the pathogenesis of hypertension and atherosclerosis. Using molecular, cellular and pharmacological approaches, Dr. Eid’s laboratory focuses on the cAMP signaling in human arteriolar smooth muscle cells. The long terms goals of Dr. Eid's laboratory include the identification of novel targets and/or compounds with antihypertensive therapeutic potential.

أ.د.غدنانه سعيد المقبل البنعلي حصلت على دكتوراه الفلسفة في التربية " مناهج وطرق تدريس" من كلية البنات – جامعة عين شمس، 1989م. كانت قد حصلت على ماجستير في التربية – تخصص طرق تدريس مواد اجتماعية، من كلية البنات – جامعة عين شمس، سنة 1985م، وعلى دبلوم خاص في التربية وعلم النفس، كلية التربية – جامعة قطر، يونيو 1980م.كما حصلت على بكالوريوس الآداب والتربية،جامعة قطر، يونيو 1978م. الأستاذة الدكتورة غدنانة رئيس لقسم العلوم التربوية كلية التربية ، جامعة قطر منذ عام 2007، وهي أستاذ المناهج وطرق التدريس ، بكلية التربية – جامعة قطر. في 2003-2004 تولت منصب رئيس قسم المناهج وطرق التدريس، كلية التربية - جامعة قطر. شاركت في العديد من اللجان العلمية والأكاديمية منذ 1990، من ذلك: لجنة الاعتماد الأكاديمي، كلية التربية – جامعة قطر، رئيس لجنة التفرغ العلمي لأعضاء هيئة التدريس بقسم العلوم التربوية، عضو في لجنة لتحكيم الأوراق المقدمة للحصول على جائزة الجودة والتميز، كلية التربية – جامعة قطر، رئيس لجنة الترقيات الأكاديمية، كلية التربية – جامعة قطر. .. الخ. كما شاركت في العديد من المؤتمرات العلمية بالإضافة إلى تقديمها عدد من ورش العمل لأعضاء هيئة التدريس بجامعة قطر ولمدرسي المدارس المستقلة. لها العديد من البحوث والدراسات المنشورة في مجال المناهج وطرق التدريس. إضافة إلى تأليفها لخمسة كتب دراسية للمراحل التعليمية (الابتدائية والثانوية) في تخصص الجغرافيا.

Dr. Clayton Keller's almost 35-year career in special education in the United States has comprised: work as a paraprofessional and teacher for students with emotional/behavioral disorders, doctoral studies at the University of Virginia, teacher preparation and research for 13 years at the University of Minnesota Duluth, and his most recent position supporting state initiatives in the preparation and retention of special educators in Minnesota. Dr. Clay's scholarship has been in the areas of inclusion, the construct of learning disabilities, educators who have disabilities, and international special education. Dr. Keller's international experiences have included: a 1997 Fulbright Scholar Award at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Norway, a Fulbright Senior Specialist Award at Middle East Technical University in Turkey in 2003,; serving as Co-Director of the 2007 conference, “The International Special Education Forum,” in Peru, and being a Visiting Researcher at the University of Agder in Norway(2009).

Following that Ms. Eiman worked at Al-Noor Institute for students with visual Impairments as a Supervisor of Inclusion and Mainstreaming Program (2005 - 2007). Since that time, Ms. Eiman has been with Qatar University as the Head of the Special Needs Section. The first and current Foundation Program Special Needs Liaison, Mr. John D. Tribuna, earned his Master in Teaching English to Students of Other Languages (TESOL) at the School for International Training (SIT) Institute in Vermont, USA and is also currently a Lecturer of English in the Qatar University Foundation Program.

Mr. Tribuna began his full-time advocating for and educating of faculty about students with Special Needs in Japan in 1996 when he was asked to teach students who ‘hated English’, and since then has worked with a wide range of learning disabilities in the northeastern United States, and now Qatar.

Professor Malcolm Potts was awarded his DSc. in Dessication Tolerance (1995), PhD. in Microbiology (1977), and BSc. in Botany (1973) from Durham University (UK). Since 2006 Professor Potts has been serving at Qatar University first, as Lead Scholar, then as Visiting Professor and currently Professor, Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. Professor Potts has held positions in USA at Florida State University and Virginia Tech, as well as in Antarctica, Germany, and Aldabra Atoll in the Indian Ocean. Professor Malcolm has membership in numerous professional organizations like The World Cultural Council Interdisciplinary Committee for the Albert Einstein World Award in Science (1987-to present) and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He did Post doctorals at Oldenburg University, Germany; The Royal Society - Israel Academy of Sciences Post Doctoral Fellow, Hadassah Medical School, and Heinz Steinitz Marine Biology Laboratory, Eilat. Professor Malcolm's research is in the area of molecular basis for environmental stress tolerance (bacteria to human) and his research support is more than $23 million since 2008.

In 2010 Nicolas Gromik and Nicolas Manochehri received an Internal Grant from QU to investigate iPod technology. Mr. Gromik frequently publishes on the benefit of integrating filmmaking and video editing into the language classroom and regularly offers workshops on moviemaking and video editing using Windows Movie Maker software; most recently, he has run workshops in China, India, Japan, and Poland. Prof. Ali was the previous Managing Editor of the Educational Sciences Journal, issued by QU College of Education and is currently serving on the editorial boards of the Educational Technology Journal (Egyptian Educational Technology Association) and of Tawasol Journal (QU External Relations). Currently, Prof. Ali is the principal investigator of a research project entitled: "The Role of Qatar University Core Curriculum Program in Improving Students’ Academic Performance, Enhancing their Career Development, and Fulfilling Qatari National Needs" being conducted within the framework of QNRF National Priorities Research Program.
